It is a small, compact, soft-wooded, dwarf shrub with Unisexual flowers(dioecious). It has blue-green leaves that are semi-evergreen. Its small, compact branches are often spread and droop to stay close to the ground.
It also develops a thick caudex or root-stock, which has led to it being a popular bonsai specimen.
It is the closest relative of its sister-species Portulacaria fruiculosa within the genus Portulacaria.
