The American
Bonsai Society

WELCOME!

The Virginia Bonsai Society meets monthly on the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 PM in Baker Hall (Holly Room) at Norfolk Botanical Garden.

The Society is devoted to interest in and furtherance of the art of bonsai.
Through meetings, demonstrations, shows, lectures, discussions, workshops, and one-on-one tutoring, members of the Society pursue techniques for cultivating beautiful small trees growing them in shallow containers.

The Society presents an annual show, held in Baker Hall at Norfolk Botanical Garden , to display members' trees. In addition, there are raffles, demonstrations, and member vendors.

  • November's Meeting will be our annual Auction. In the last Newsletter the Rule and procedures were included. If you did not get a copy of the rules, please see the Resource Center page for a copy.
  • It is hoped that we are able to get Arthur Joura, NC Arboretum Bonsai Curator, for a special visit in November. More information to follow.
  • The Bonsai Display is Looking good at the Norfolk Botanical Garden. The Display opened a little over a  month ago and Greg Frech and his volunteers have been working hard to make it a success. The next time you are at NBG Stop by and check it out.

Monthly Bonsai Tips

October

  • October is a continuation of Septembers watering practices.  Now that the nights are down into the low 60's and upper 50's you soil mix will retain water more. Be sure to check each Bonsai's needs before watering.

  • Feeding is still necessary, however you should reduce the nitrogen to as close to Zero as possible to discourage new growth of branches and leaves.  Also kicking up the potassium and phosphorus will promote root and truck growth.

  • Four your tropicals, start watching the weather closely!!  Night time temps are dropping into the 50's and 40's are not unheard of. Now is the time to start to prepare you winter storage situation for them.  Be sure to water them appropriately and keep them feed.

  • September is the time that trunks and branches will start to thicken up so be sure to watch your wiring to prevent wire marks.

  • Now is a good time to start cleaning your bonsai for winter storage and to apply fungicide and insecticide
